چکیده

Submitted for the MAR07 Meeting of The American Physical Society Enhanced Fluorescence Blinking of CdSe/ZnS Quantum Dot Clusters MING YU, ALAN VAN ORDEN, Colorado State University — Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have been studied for many years to understand their unique, size tunable optical properties, and to investigate their potential applications in optoelectronic devices and biological imaging. In particular, much effort has been devoted to the phenomenon of fluorescence intermittency, or blinking, of individual QDs. In our work, we used spatially correlated single molecule fluorescence spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to study the structures and fluorescence blinking of single CdSe/ZnS core-shell QDs, small ensembles of two or more isolated QDs, and close-packed clusters containing two or more QDs. When multiple isolated QDs were probed simultaneously, the fluorescence behavior was consistent with independent blinking of the particles. However, when close-packed QD clusters were probed, the fluorescence intermittency became much more rapid and intense than could be explained by the summation of multiple particles blinking independently.[1] This suggests when the QDs cluster together, they become electronically coupled in some way that enhances the fluorescence. One possible explanation for this coupling is that the trapping of photoexcited electrons from one or more of the QDs can enhance the fluorescence properties of neighboring QDs by passivating external trap sites available to the neighboring QDs. Quantum dot blueing and blinking enables fluorescence nanoscopy.

We demonstrate superresolution fluorescence imaging of cells using bioconjugated CdSe/ZnS quantum dot markers. Fluorescence blueing of quantum dot cores facilitates separation of blinking markers residing closer than the diffraction barrier. The high number of successively emitted photons enables ground state depletion microscopy followed by individual marker return with a resolving power of th...

Single dot luminescence characteristics of CdSe/ZnS core-shell structured quantum dots with different ligands

Chemical derivatizations with different ligands were perfomed on CdSe/ZnS core-shell quantum dots (QDs). The ligands serve a role to increase water solubility and bio-compatibility of QDs in the application of in vivo biomedical fluorescence imaging. These QDs were synthesized with various capping agents and optically characterized by using single molecule detection technique to investigate the...

Core size dependent hole transfer from a photoexcited CdSe/ZnS quantum dot to a conductive polymer.

Photoinduced hole transfer from a CdSe/ZnS quantum dot to a conjugated polymer is tuned by varying the quantum dot core size. Hole transfer affects the photoluminescence blinking of the quantum dot, increasing the duration of the on-states and decreasing that of the off-states.

Antibunching single-photon emission and blinking suppression of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots.

We demonstrated that by properly coupling to silver nanoprisms, single CdSe/ZnS semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) exhibited suppressed blinking behavior, an enhanced fluorescence intensity ( approximately 2.5 fold), increased radiative decay rates ( approximately 12.5 fold), and antibunching single-photon emission. All these modifications significantly promote the overall performance of the prop...

CdSeS/ZnS alloyed nanocrystal lifetime and blinking studies under electrochemical control.

Alloyed CdSeS nanocrystals allow tuning between the CdSe and CdS band edges while remaining relatively small. The CdSeS cores also lead to a reduced electron confinement energy and a slower biexciton decay rate compared to CdSe cores of similar sizes. A ZnS shell synthesis procedure allows stable CdSeS/ZnS colloidal quantum dots (QDs) suitable for single dot imaging. These are compared to CdSe/...
